course record
By Lance Bergeson • lbergeson@dmreg.com • October 18, 2009
Robyn Friedman flashed a big smile and raised her arms as she crossed the finish
line at the Des Moines Marathon.
Two weeks after finishing sixth in the Twin Cities Marathon, the determined Iowan
had delivered a come-from-behind win while breaking her own course record.
Friedman caught and passed tiring Ukrainian Vera Ovcharuk at mile 22 to win the 26.2-mile
race for the second time in 2 hours, 41 minutes, 31 seconds.

“I’m surprised and pleased – I didn’t expect to have to run this fast,” said a shivering
Friedman in the chilly, 45-degree weather. “This is my home marathon. I love this
marathon.” (more)
