Trail Runs Growing More Popular

Growing up as part of the baby boom generation I have watched the road racing scene evolve in Iowa. From MAYBE 10 a year back in the 70's to well over300 today, Iowan's have expanded the opportunities for competing to keep pace with the running boom of the last thirty years. As more races take place it has become harder and harder to give each event an identity of it's own. For the past few years one of the fastest growing races has been the Living History Farms Race which presented the individuals with the unique setting of running a race through this state's most valuable commodity, the black earth and crops that make it so special. In the past 10 years, more and more of these "trail" races have popped up as some of the kids of this BB group grew to enjoy cross country and want to continue it into their adulthood.
This year off-road events started in May (with the Pilot Knob 15K Trail Race) and will continue through December. These are a great chance to get off the pavement and really see the Iowa countryside. In the next month trail races include;

Luther Cross Country Running Series, Decorah
Buffalo Run, La Porte City.
Prairie Fun Run/Walk, Prairie City.
The Skunk on the Dam, Humboldt.
The Grimes Farm Race,(one of the prettiest courses in the state), near Marshalltown.
Pine Lake Trail Run, Eldora, IA.

16 or more Events on the Weekend of June 26-27 & the Fourth of July

New Products

This seems to be the time of the year when the new support shoes are coming out. All of the companies are addressing this person with new techniques for controlling that little or lot of over-pronation.
Adidas - A new upper on the SuperNova Control means a better fit and greater comfort for this, their most popular shoe. Just for the ladies a new version of the Brevard that is more flexible and really focused on preventing pronation with no heel slippage.
Asics - these guys are convinced that they can stop pronation without making the shoe feel like it. Two new shoes feature their "integral guidance system" that allows your foot to go through its gate naturally but still controls pronation. The 'Empire' for the forefoot pronators (toe out runners) and the 'Evolution' for the flatter footed people.
Saucony - the Omni 3 set a standard for a great feeling yet very stable shoe and the Omni 4 only improves it.

New Products (continued)

New Balance - the 854 was a number one seller and the replacement 855 just did not work as well for the masses. The new 856 goes back to the tradition of the 851-854 series with a great fit and that natural feel that made the series such a hit.
Nike - a new version of the Air Structure Triax with individual characteristics for men and women. Smoother, less bulky feel and ride.

It's Festival Time

June is here and that means festivals in Iowa. Almost every town in Iowa has something to celebrate and summer is the best time to do it. What a great chance to tour the state, run a race and participate in your heritage. Follow that by indulging yourself with some of the best food anywhere. Iowa,
