Tri-Time

Tri's are in! This year there are more triathlons and bigger triathlons than we've seen since the '80's. The baby-boomer's kids are hitting it hard and training around the clock. Central Iowa now has its own Triathlon Club. There are events every weekend all summer long and sometimes even more than one. Distances range from very short to half Ironman's. These athletes train harder and in most cases are more injury free than the full time runners. Some of the events are drawing over 500 participants. Contact the Central Iowa MultiSport Club @ http://www.centraliowamultisport.com/. Give it a Tri! In addition to the running segment, we have the necessary equipment for the swimming and biking portions including clothing that takes you all the way through the event. Also, the Nike Air Kukini (see New Products article) shoe that goes on fast and fits well to boot.

Fall Sports start in less than a Month!

School sports are less than one month away and those first few workouts can be painful. Coaches want athletes who are in condition. Why not start getting in shape now? No matter what the sport, conditioning plays a key role. Running to build endurance and doing a few wind-sprints now will help keep you from dying out on the practice field next month. Sitting in air conditioning all summer will bring no rewards when it comes to early fall sports under a blazing sun.

Fall Race Calendar is Full

Take a look at the other side of this sheet and start making plans. The fall calendar is the busiest it has been in numerous years. When you combine that with all the marathon possibilities, road trips will abound.

Capital Pursuit

This race kicks off the fall race schedule and it is one you don't want to miss. Whether you use it to find out how your marathon training is going, or just want to set a new P.R. this is the place. Last year almost a thousand participants signed up for this family friendly Labor Day weekend event. A 10 mile run on "the fastest course in the state", and a 5K run / walk that allows strollers makes this a great activity that burns some calories before you head over to the Downtown Farmers Market. This market has been selected as one of the top ten in the U.S.A. The end of August is the best time for homegrown produce and homebaked goodies. A great time in itself.
Free showers are available at the Riverfront YMCA (two blocks from the finishline).

Pump & Run Picking Up!

Last year there were a few and this year its the new thing to do. Not content to just be aerobically healthy, more and more runners are listening to the fitness guru's and adding weightlifting to their regimen. At Hudson this past month, over 250 participants did the "Pump & Run". For every pump of a prescribed barbell weight, you get so many seconds taken off your 5K time. Some are ending up with combined times of under 12 minutes. Impressive! There are more of these events coming up. (See calendar).

Baby Jogger Lowers it's Prices

This actually happened the first of the year but I never did announce it, so here goes. Almost all of the models came down $50. Now you can have the original (and the best) for the price of the imitators.

New Products Arriving Daily

All of the shoe companies are updating their lines. July and August see the introduction of a number of new models for the back to school season. Here are a few of the models that have just arrived.
Adidas
TwinStrike 2- first shoe with complete A3 technology. Very durable with a firm ride and good stability. S
AdiStar Cushion- much softer feel than the original A3 and a snug, almost narrow fit. Should be durable. C
AdiStar Control- here is a truly supportive shoe for the bigger person with a straight, narrow foot. MC
Response Control- great value for a support shoe. Straight last with medial post at $75. MC
Asics
Koji GS- very slight modification for a better fit. MC
Brooks
Trance NXS- they very carefully improved on a sure thing. Cushy in the forefoot and a smoother ride. S
Glycerin 2- I didn't think they could improve this but they did. It's even better in it's feel and fit. C
Mizuno
Wave Alchemy 3- a great seller that now comes in widths. A softer ride and better lacing. S to MC
New Balance
880- It just keeps getting better. This shoe has been a stalwart for close to ten years. This time it fits snugger.
870- a true off-road shoe that fits and feels great. My personal favorite at this moment.
Nike
Air Kukini- made for triathletes. Very light weight, flexible with a completely water draining upper and a Velcro™ closure system that really fits well and goes on fast. Finally a Tri shoe that works! L
Air Spiridon- light weight racer / trainer that takes the minimalist upper search to there extreme. Zoom Air. LC
Reebok
Premier FSM- this is their top of the line stability shoe. Nice fit and feel. Good support and value. S
Premier Stability- one of our employees gave up his Orthotics when he got these. Nice shoe. MC
Saucony
Grid Azura I- a go fast shoe for the neutral runner. Good racer / trainer. LC

Cross Country Spikes & Race Results

It's that time of the year and the new shoes are out. Adidas and Asics have updated their models and in Adidas's case, lightened the shoe up a bit. Nike has brought out new colors and a new shoe called the Kennedy XC. It is an off-shoot of their Waffle XC of a few years and the Zoom Kennedy track spike. Very light.
All of these shoes have rubber soles with cleat type arrangements as well as the spikes. If you get to a course where half of the race is on pavement you can remove the spikes and still get great traction.
Shoes are in stock now but they will be going fast. Some of the older athletes (their feet have stopped growing) have already gotten theirs for this fall.
See our complete spike selection as well as our;

Central Iowa XC meet results on our web site at; www.FitnessSports.com.

For the fourth year running, FitnessSports.com will be hosting the results of a number of Central Iowa's major cross country meets. We have posted a list of the meets that we plan on covering. Others are welcome to send us their results. We will try to get them posted within 24 hours. Go to the XC results link on our main page.
