Racing Season is Back!

I've been trying to contact race directors for the past few weeks and I can say one thing. More races are on the horizon. By the time you receive this, over a dozen events will have happened and it only gets busier. Take a look at our "calendar" and if you know of some that aren't listed, have someone contact us with up to date info. There are 7 contests on the second weekend in March and April Fools weekend may have 8.

WHAMM is BACK - May 8th

WHAMM was one of the original "big time charity events" in Central Iowa. It ran from 1980 to 2000 and then the Lung Assn. let it go. Now, it's back.
The Muscular Dystrophy Assn. hasn't had a race of it's own since the Love Run went away back in the late 80's. This organization was very helpful for my close friend Chuck Jipp while he was suffering from ALS and my wife's family and I have committed to this cause.
You know them for the "Jerry Lewis Telethon" but too often we forget about them the rest of the year. We want to encourage everyone to run a 5 or 10K course that challenges you. Not the flattest but definitely one of the most scenic as it travels through the new Town Center and residential areas of Windsor Heights. And it's got a 10K!

New Shoes Keep Coming

Adidas
Universal - cushioned comfort with an excellent "Americanized fit". Some of the Adidas shoes just run too narrow. Not this one. $110
Reebok
Premier Ultra DMX - very nice top end cushion shoe. This will compete with the best of them. $110
Brooks
Adrenaline GTS 5 - one of the best Stability shoes just gets tweaked. Good thing. $90
Mizuno
Creation 5 - this version incorporates some new tech, but not enough to change the previous shoe's feel. $120
Rider 7 - I'll summarize " they never make enough of these". $90
Nike
Air Zoom Swift Vapor - tests have shown that Zoom Air technology is not only shock absorbant but beats all others when it coming to "energy return". This one is truly for those who "want to go fast". $100
(continued next column)

Saucony (Continued; shoes)
Swerve - for the neutral runners who want a minimalist shoe that's light and fast. $100
Trigon - three versions for three different weight categories of neutral to mild pronators. Light, Responsive (middle weight class), Durable (heavier runner). $90

A Letter that we received

My husband, Tom, and I are runners and belong to a running club in Massachusetts called "Merrimack Valley Striders". We were in Clearwater, Florida last weekend and met Dennis O'Donnell, a runner from Iowa.
The reason I am contacting you is that Tom and nine other guys will be running, relay-style, from San Francisco to Boston in May. . . . I will be going along as part of a four-person support crew. Here is a link to our website: http://www.trekusa.org . We will be running from Lincoln, NE to Osceola, IA on Friday, May 14th, then on to Burlington, IA on Saturday. Dennis mentioned that we will be going through the area where your club is located. (This effort is for the "Jimmy Fund" a children's charity).
I was wondering if you, or anyone from your club, would like to come out and run along with us, maybe giving the guys some company. They are committed to running an average of fifteen miles a day for twenty-five days. The leg from Lincoln to Osceola is 172 miles.
Best regards, Lyn Licciardello
Team members are: Bob Lussier, Bill Lapsley, Paul McGovern, Harrison ''Hap'' Farber, Mike Thompson. Front row: Fernando Braz, Mike Barry, Josh Nemzer, Dave McGillivray, Tom Licciardello (Tom is a TREK USA Team Member).
